Embrace critical self-reflection and engage with new perspectives for continuous personal improvement.

TOECM’s Steps to Unlearning and Relearning

You cannot unlearn that which you never learnt. The deeper you explore your current beliefs and ideals, the easier it becomes to let go of outdated ideas (unlearn) and adopt new ones (relearn).

Developing a habit of continuous learning and improvement makes this process smoother.

To Unlearn
  1. Identify Your Core Beliefs: Reflect on your deepest values, ideals, and beliefs. Understanding what you stand for is crucial.

  2. Dive Deeper: Dive deeper into understanding these beliefs. Don’t be afraid to explore them in detail.

  3. Spot and Address Flaws: Be open to spotting and acknowledging any inconsistencies or issues within your beliefs.

  4. Let Go of Flaws: It’s best to address and discard flawed beliefs early on to avoid internal conflicts and confusion.

To Relearn
  1. Explore Opposing Views: Take time to understand beliefs and perspectives that differ from your own. Understanding differing perspectives can broaden your view.

  2. Question All Beliefs: Critically evaluate both your own beliefs and opposing ones. Compare and contrast them to understand their validity.

  3. Adjust Your Perspective: Replace outdated or flawed beliefs with more reasonable and informed ones based on your new insights.

  4. Keep Evolving: Make continuous learning a part of your routine. Regularly unlearn and relearn (update and refine your understanding) as you grow.

To move past entrenched indoctrination, start by acknowledging that change is necessary and actively decide to pursue it. Practicing epoche—suspending judgment and keeping your mind open and unbiased—is essential. This approach allows you to critically reassess your beliefs, facilitating the process of unlearning and relearning.
